If you're talking about the Grand Prix: True, it's not gonna place high on that one. The Grand Prix is open for all the horses in the game. With his genetic potential of a foundation horse, "Champion", being one of the horses from the tutorial, is like the other end of the breeding line.
The best horses are bred by players, mostly in teams, and it requires quite some work. You will not get one of these horses gifted for free, just as a part of the tutorial.
"Champion" is most likely named like this, because he might have better chances of winning due to the bonuses he comes with. He can win some competitions against similar horses, but to compete in the Grand Prix you might have to participate in a team or at least buy some good horses and breed them yourself.

Potentially you tried to enter on the weekend? The Grand Prix only runs from Monday to Friday and is open to all regular horses. Outside of that you'll have to contact support if it's still not working.
