[Info] Blup and training tips

This thread is intended to help those who are having problems training/blupping their horses and to help streamline any training methods which possibly need tweaking.
If you have any training programs that have worked for you, please feel free to post. Knowledge shared is knowledge learned default smiley ;)

BLUP - Best Linear Unbiased Prediction

Why is BLUP so important?
BLUP is a genetic indicator. It plays a role in reproduction because the BLUP of the parents has an impact on the potential of the foal at birth. The higher the blup, the better quality foals will be reproduced, therefore the best quality foals will be produced from 100blupped parents.

Basics of blup - any horse
~ Horse to have top 3 GP skills bolded. This is done by training, rides and entering competitions that coincide with those skills.
~ Horse to win 20 comps - any combination
~ Horse to be at least 10 years old.

In terms of points gained for blup:
All foals are born with around -100blup. This means they need to gain a full 200 points to achieve +100blup
~ Your horse gets 130 points for completed training in its best three gp skills, this includes rides and comps., the skill must go bold before this requirement is met.
~ 40 points for reaching the age of 10
~ 30 points for winning 20 competitions.
All these points are gained over time a little each day until your horse reaches 100

Training tips for specific breeds are welcome

Try eaglespirit's about the 7th or 8th comment down on the previous page. It works really well for most breeds (I say most because I havn't personally tried it on every breeddefault smiley ;) )

so does the rides tab close when you are finished?like the training one?
aannd how can you increase trot after doing beach rides?default smiley (o)
No the rides tab doesn't close because you can still do rides etcept they are pointless because you don't gain anything. The training bars closes because you can't do more training once the bar is full.

As for increasing skills here are your options

Standard ones you have probably done are...
-training
-rides
-comps for skill gain

Then you can do the following...
-playing with companions that give skill gain
-lessons (only affect top 2 skills though)
-beach rides as you mentioned (you don't gain skills. Skills from your lowest skill get transfered to your best skill)

After the age of 25 horses can no longer gain skills.

Ive done this way many times on international :

Bold in speed & dressage then put your horse in cross - country competitions and they should earn most their wins from there

If you still have a couple of wins left to go bold you horse in stanima , gallop & jumping and then put your horses in trot races.

Bold your horses trot and age him / her to 10default smiley ;)
By Retired breeder, 3rd August 2011 12:12:36
Another way which is fast is you do :

1 hour trot riding until you cannot earn anything more.
Then do gallop riding until you have nothing left to earn ( if your horse has jumping as one of its 3 best skills do jumping riding until you earn nothing else )

Fully train your horse in its 3 best skills. ( leave 1 bar if its trot )

Then keep on doing trot races once you have your wins then bold you horse in its 3 best skills ( if the horse has trot as its 3 best finish off the trot bar default smiley ;))

If you want you can also do dressage competitions as you can win from theredefault smiley ;)

so will a horse over 25 not gain skills from BM items either?(this was my first horse, curio.its takin me a while to figure blupping out!)default smiley (lol)
Horses don't earn skills from BM items (except diamonds and divines) they earn bonuses. Horses over 25 still earn bonuses.

Yay! I'm so glad this topic is here!
My youngest (and best) horse needs four months (when he turns ten) until he's BLUPed!default smiley ^)
I'm finally starting to understand BLUPing and work out a bit of a method.

Train for as much as your horses energy can take in things it excels in. Then get its energy down to 20% by training. This is what I did on Dia from 2 1/2, look!
By Retired breeder, 2nd September 2011 08:56:43
I have started doing this:
Finish dressage and speed rides
Enter comps until I have 20 wins
Finish rides for top skills
Train top skills and then train other skills

Not sure if this is faster or not but alot of people were saying bold speed and dressage so then you cna enter easy competitions :P
By Retired breeder, 3rd September 2011 00:06:41
I've found it's best to train jumping and dressage for cross-country comps, not stamina. It seems to make the horse be able to enter easier comps.
it takes about 4-5 years even though it is boring it is worth it
normally you get 60+ skills added onto your horse

When i train horses on my international account i trained in stamina first every day when they have 100% energy train for around 3 hours 30. then i do the others in order, works for me...
thanks bye

Question-is it worth skipping lessons to BLUP faster? I do lessons every day, but wondering what others think?
By Retired breeder, 26th September 2011 02:32:41
I don't do lessons much while BLUPing - but then, I'm not interested in skillers. If you wanted a good skiller, then it is a good idea, if not - it's best not to.
I start doing lessons when I am waiting for my horses to turn ten.
Hope this helps.
Ammy it would depend whether you want high skills or just fully bluped?

For example, when I am bluping my skillers or grand prix horses then I do a lesson each day no matter what.
But if I am just bluping for breeding then I don't usually do a lesson each day.

So a horse over 10 with less than 20 wins and bolded 3 skills is +70 BLUP, cool! That means Gypsy is close. Do beach rides count as completing rides?
By Retired breeder, 25th October 2011 05:23:56
For Fjords, only train in (and in this order) speed, gallop & dressage. Then do short gallop rides, beach rides & gallop rides. This is what I do with my Fjords. it may work with other breeds with dressage, gallop & speed as top three in genetics.
