[Info] Cross Breeders

The purpose of this topic is for cross breeders to have a place to discuss their crossbreeding programs and to share crossbreeding secrets and advice with others who may be interested in giving crossbreeding a try. Feel free to talk about your crossbreeding programs and your achievements and failures in crossbreeding. There are many other aspects to crossbreeding, and we wish to include all if possible
Please remember to follow the rules of the forum and be informative and helpful default smiley :)

Here are a few points for beginners:
♦ If both parents are purebred, then the foal will present as the fathers’ breed
♦ If one or both are not purebred, then the foal will take on whatever is the dominant breed
♦ We cannot convert crossbreeds back to purebred. The most they will ever be is 99%
♦ When blupping, you need to take into account the top 3GP skills of the *individual* horse, not necessarily the breed it presents as
♦ The most important thing when it comes to crossbreeding? - to have fun default smiley ;)

Please bear in mind this is not the place to advertise coverings, nor is it for selling horses.

Thanks

this is a great post dragon as i've been tempted to stick my toes into cross breeding on the side, but would like to know more about how the skill set would be affected by each breeding. would cross breeds make better comp horses? and then what would be the disadvantage to cross breeding?
By Retired breeder, 17th April 2011 03:22:26
Well, Dragon, we all know that you are at the top with cross-breeding. default smiley :p
Carbon Beat, one of the disadvantages, of course, is that it will never be purebred again.
As for whether or not crossbreeds make better comp horses, that depends on the type of cross breed and the competition. default smiley ;)

I don't crossbreed much but might start to when I get around to it with more passes.
When starting out, I strongly recommend choosing two breeds that have a similar skill set so they compliment each other. It really depends on what one wishes to accomplish as there are many crossbreeding projects. Some will not be in place on here just yet until overall GP starts to raise a lot higher

By all means, crosses can make excellent comp horses, but you do have to be more selective which comps and when, which in turn means altering any specific training method you may have. In terms of blupping, you still need to take the top 3 GP skills into account. This may vary quite differently to the top 3 GP skills of the breed itself.

I know from the int version that fresian x paints were good comp horses. I wish to that her but I can't seem to find some cheap horses in the sales *thinks*

Also on INT version Purebred Spanish Horse / Arabian Horse Gives You Great Skills In J/S/S/D/G/T ( jumping , speed , stamina , dressage , gallop , trot ) which i think makes a good horse for the grand prix
Not much of a trot gain though. Arabs x fresians works but they aren't compatible her do tekes x fresians.

A teke + Fre. trotter x shetland and Freisian. would be good I think. Friesian + Teke would balance out stamina (other breeds don't have bad speed either). Shetland + Fre Trotter would balance out Speed (other breeds don't have bad speed either), Friesian would balance out dressage (teke, Fre + shetland don't have bad dressage either). Friesian, teke and sheltie balance out gallop, Fre and Friesian balance out trot, and then teke and shetland balance out jumping! default smiley :-))

I'll have to try that sometime. default smiley :)

I Think Akhal / Friesan / Hanoverian / Arab / Thouroughbred / French Trotter Will Make Good Skills Since

Akhals = Stamina
Friesan = Dressage
Hano = Jumping
Arab = Speed
Thouroughbred = Gallop
French Trotters = Trot

So I Think It Will Make a Master of Skills.

However, ben, you need to still be wary of breeds that have high of something and low of something else. For example, the majority of horses that have high stamina/speed/dressage/gallop/jumping have trot as their lowest skill. If that were the case, even if you had a really good trotter, it wouldn't even out. But your combination would probably work because it has the Friesian to even out the trot as well. default smiley :-))
Fresians have a trotting ability that would work and maybe you could cross a fjord in the somewhere. I did plan to do this once never got around to doing though.
As I stated before on the international paints and fresians mix rather well and athe top 4 skills are all starred in the skill bar leaving trot and jumping half a star behind. I know that here we wouldn't have a full skill bar but at least half. Cross a fjord with a trotter than mix that horse with the other one and add a jumping horse x in there aswell. May actually work

Sorry wild I would love to work with you but in this moment of time the Shetland Unicorns are calling! Plus I'm quite busy with h/w as well as BLUPping and holding for others. Perhaps one holiday day where I'm at home with nothing to do I might do a couple of experiments with you. default smiley :p But that's not for quite a while away. And perhaps sometime I will eventually bore of those unicorns not breeding unicorns that I want to breed an animal that actually produces the species it's supposed to! default smiley (lol)
I plan on cross breeding...Once I start breeding the Hanos...I have been so slowdefault smiley :p

wow have you ever tried

friesan / arab / purebred spanish horse?

i tried it and man its skills and gp are roughly the same!
Don't forget some of the skill sets for breeds have been changed from the intl game, so what works well there may not work as well here!
